One of the biggest events in the Philippines is the MassKara Festival in Bacolod City. Highlights of the yearly event are held on the fourth Sunday in October. In 1980, the Festival made its debut. The province’s main agricultural crop was sugar cane, and sugar prices were at historic lows as a result of the introduction of sugar alternatives such high fructose corn syrup in the US.

This was the first MassKara Festival and a time of tragedy; on April 22, that year, the inter-island vessel MV Don Juan, which was travelling from Manila to Bacolod City and carrying many Negrenses, including those from prominent families in the city, collided with the tanker Tacloban City and sank in the Tablas Strait off Mindoro, leaving 18 people dead and 115 people missing. The MassKara Festival was established in order to uplift the locals’ spirits and restore their smiles. The residents of Bacolod City made a statement with their grinning masks that they would overcome their difficulties and tragedies.
