Wow!! Where were Mumbai Indians till now? They are known for such comebacks and they literally snatched a win from Gujarat Titans defending an under-par total of 177 runs. Daniel Sams delivered a sensational last over keeping the likes of David Miller and Rahul Tewatia at bay and MI stuck to their task right through with the ball to eventually win the game. Clearly, the Titans had to blame themselves as well but credit to the five-time champions showing nerves of steel to register their second win.

Earlier, Rohit Sharma got MI off to a sensational start as he and Ishan Kishan stitched the highest opening stand of the season. The skipper was at his best on the day and looked like middling almost every ball for the first time. The timing was back in his shots and was fluent in his strokeplay. However, Rohit’s cameo of 43 runs was ended by Rashid Khan pinning him in front of the stumps while he tried to play a reverse sweep and the 74-run stand was broken.

Ishan Kishan also seemed to finding back his groove before getting out for 45 while Suryakumar Yadav also didn’t do much with the bat. MI lost all the momentum in the middle overs with Kieron Pollard struggling to put bat to ball before Rashid set him up nicely to castle the Caribbean. This is when Tim David came to the party and yet again showcased his hitting skills.

His powerpacked muscles were on show on the evening as the man slammed his way to an unbeaten 44 off just 21 deliveries with two fours and four sixes during his stay in the middle. David also farmed the strike denying singles in the last over smacking two sixes off Mohammed Shami helping MI post 177/6 in their 20 overs which seemed below par with the kind of start they had got.

MI defend an under-par total

Though the target was chaseable, the Titans needed a good start with nine runs required per over. Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill did just that. The former took the onus on himself to start with smashing MI bowlers left, right and centre. He took full advantage of the powerplay overs to race into the 40s while Gill took the attack to the opposition stitching a century partnership in less than 12 overs.

Both the batters got to their respective fifties as well in the process. Just when it felt like the Titans will run away with the game, Murugan Ashwin came to their rescue in the final over of his spell and nipped out both openers. With Sai Sudharsan and Hardik Pandya, two new batters, in the middle, MI sensed a chance and though they added 27 runs in three overs for the third wicket, the five-time champions were never out of the game.

Kieron Pollard broke the partnership between them in the most bizarre way with Sudharsan disturbing the stump with his own wicket while trying to smash a bouncer. Hardik Pandya then ran himself out which made the match even more interesting as the equation came down to 20 runs off the last two overs. The Titans had their finishers, David Miller and Rahul Tewatia, in the middle.

Rohit Sharma handed over the penultimate over to his best bowler in Jasprit Bumrah who bowled the entire over superbly bar one delivery off which Miller smacked a six over deep mid-wicket to make it nine to get from the final over. Generally, the batting side is backed to win the game easily in this situation but there was a twist in the tale with Rahul Tewatia getting run out to leave 7 runs to get off last three balls. And Daniel Sams delivered a sensational over keeping Miller at bay to help MI win the game by five runs conceding only three runs in the final over.
