Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma delivered a passionate speech in the dressing room following his side’s five-wicket defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders on Wednesday (April 6). The game was in the balance for the best part, MI even looked in the driver’s seat when KKR lost Andre Russell in the chase of 162. However, the five-time champions were undone by a Pat Cummins special as the Australian dasher scored a 14-ball fifty, the joint-fastest in IPL history.

Cummins’ brilliance meant MI lost their first three games of IPL 2022. Such a defeat can lower down any side’s morale and Rohit was aware of the same. Hence, he summoned his teammates in the dressing room and delivered a motivational speech. He urged the players to showcase the ‘desperation’ and play their best cricket.

We just need to stay on top of other teams: Rohit Sharma

“We seriously cannot be blaming individuals here. It’s all of us. We win together, we lose together. That is as simple as that for me. I think slight desperation is required from each one of us. That desperation is very, very, very important when we play, especially in this tournament,” Rohit said in a video posted by Mumbai Indians on their official Twitter handle.

“Because oppositions are different, they come up with different plans all the time. We just need to stay ahead of them. We just need to stay on top of them. And the only way we can do that is by having that slight hunger and that desperation on the field – with the bat, with the ball,” he added.

With MI losing three games on the trot, several fans and experts have written them off. However, Rohit still believes his side can qualify for the playoffs as these are still early days in the competition. “We don’t need to panic. Honestly, we talk about talent, potential and everything in this room – but until we bring that desperation and hunger on the ground, oppositions are not going to hand us wins just like that,” said Rohit.
