MI will take on the defending champions CSK in their next match.
The five-time champions are having a season to forget as they are currently languishing right at the bottom of the points table with just two wins from 11 games. Mumbai Indians (MI) were handed a defeat in their previous group stage encounter against the two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
The Mumbai Indians will now face a tough opponent in the form of defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their next group stage encounter. The match will be played at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on May 12 (Thursday).
It will not be an easy task for Rohit Sharma’s men, as the defending champions have somehow found their mojo back and are now winning their matches under the leadership of veteran player MS Dhoni. MI team management would like to give another go to young South African batter Dewald Brevis and will also look to include the experienced Jaydev Unadkat to strengthen their bowling department.
Here’s a look at the Mumbai Indians’ predicted playing XI against CSK:
Openers: Rohit Sharma (c) and Ishan Kishan (wk)
Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan played an excellent knock of 51 runs against KKR. However, the left-handed batter did not find any kind of support from the other end. Kishan has not been at his best in this edition, but has made a decent score in the previous match and would wish to continue his performance with the bat against CSK as well.
Skipper Rohit Sharma has not been able to find his mojo in IPL 2022 so far. The right-handed batter only managed to score two runs in the previous match and has been struggling to even rotate the strike. With MI eventually out of the playoffs race, Rohit would look to play more freely and score runs for his team.
Middle Order: Dewald Brevis, Tilak Varma, Tim David
With Suryakumar Yadav ruled out of the tournament, the five-time champions MI can give a chance to youngster Dewald Brevis, who earlier in the tournament had played some short but explosive knocks for the Men in Blue and Gold. In a match against PBKS, the right-handed batter had stolen the limelight when he thrashed Rahul Chahar for 28 runs in one over.
Young batter Tilak Varma has been one of the top performers for MI this season. However, the left-handed batter could only manage to score six runs in the previous match and will look to bounce back in the next encounter against CSK. Meanwhile, Tim David could also manage only 13 runs in the previous match and he would like to score some quick runs in the next match.
All-rounders: Kieron Pollard, Daniel Sams
Poor performances from the MI all-rounders have also let their team down. The veteran all-rounder Pollard has contributed only 144 runs in the last 11 matches and has scalped a total of four wickets so far. The big unit from West Indies has not been at his best in the tournament so far, but no one can question his ball-striking capabilities, perhaps the reason MI would look to stick with him for the next match.
Australian all-rounder Daniel Sams has been performing well since he made his return to the playing XI. He also managed to defend nine runs against GT and gave away just 26 runs in the previous match. Sams is also a destructive player with the bat and would want to give his level best in the next match against CSK.
Bowlers: Murugan Ashwin, Kumar Kartikeya, Jasprit Bumrah, Jaydev Unadkat
Senior pacer Jasprit Bumrah wreaked havoc on the KKR batting line-up as he took five wickets and gave away just ten runs in his four-over quota. The right-arm pacer was also adjudged the Player of the Match for his excellent bowling performance and would like to continue his good form with the ball against CSK. Similarly, Kumar Kartikeya also scalped two vital wickets of the KKR openers and will look to repeat his performance in the upcoming match.
Murugan Ashwin has been bowling well for the five-time champions this season. In eight matches, the right-arm spinner has scalped nine wickets and has bowled with a decent economy of 7.86. Meanwhile, the left-arm pacer Jaydev Unadkat can also make a comeback in the playing XI replacing Riley Meredith.
MI’s predicted playing XI for the CSK clash: Ishan Kishan (wk), Rohit Sharma (c), Tilak Varma, Dewald Brevis, Tim David, Kieron Pollard, Daniel Sams, Murugan Ashwin, Kumar Kartikeya, Jasprit Bumrah, Jaydev Unadkat.
