The 70th and final match of the league stage of IPL 2022 between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Sunday (May 22) was a sort of anti-climax with both teams already eliminated from the playoff race, but a lot of pride was at stake for the franchises.
SRH’s stand-in skipper Bhuvneshwar Kumar opted to bat first after winning the toss, but the side could only post 157/8 with Abhishek Sharma (43) being the top-scorer. Harpreet Brar (3/26) and Nathan Ellis (3/40) were the most successful bowlers for PBKS.
PBKS chased down the target in just 15.1 overs for the loss of five wickets with Liam Livingstone (49*) and Shikhar Dhawan (39) playing brilliantly. Afghanistan’s Fazalhaq Farooqi bowled well to take two wickets. With this win PBKS finished sixth and SRH eighth on the points table respectively.
Mayank Agarwal, who had a difficult season with the bat could only score 1 run before Washington Sundar dismissed him. It was a short and painful stay at the crease, as he received a painful blow on the ribs off a short ball by Umran Malik.
The PBKS skipper had engaged in some banter with the speedster when he came out to bat on the final ball of the SRH innings, which was a free-hit. The fast bowler laughed it off at the time but responded with the ball in hand as he left the batter in a lot of pain with a brutal delivery.
At the post-match presentation, Mayank was asked about the incident by Murali Kartik, to which he replied, “It’s going to be sore, probably going for an X-ray now. They never expected a no-ball, so he wasn’t ready. I asked him (Malik) whether he was wearing a protective gear and he shouldn’t get hurt.ââââââ” as quoted by Cricbuzz.
Umran Malik received his maiden call-up for India earlier in the day for the five-match T20I series against South Africa.
