The 46th game of IPL 2022 saw Sunrisers Hyderabad square off against the Chennai Super Kings at the MCA Stadium in Pune. While the former had a good form in the tournament, the latter’s journey had been topsy turvy, with a switch in the captaincy after eight games into the season. MS Dhoni stepping into the leadership role proved worthy for the team as CSK triumphed over SRH by 13 runs to register their third victory of the season.
The CSK openers put on an incredibly thrilling batting exhibition. Coming into this game, Ruturaj Gaikwad had been low on runs, and CSK had struggled to find a solid opening combination throughout the competition, but the tables turned this time. Gaikwad and Devon Conway set up the biggest opening partnership for CSK in the history of the franchise, with the former smashing his way to 99 before falling one run short of his maiden century of the season.
Conway put forth a strong showing in this game, hitting an undefeated 55-ball 85*. But the partnership got off to a cautious start, running briskly between the wickets, picking out the poor ball and capitalizing on it in the powerplay. After six overs, 40 felt reasonable, but then Gaikwad (99 off 57) unleashed his fury. He took on SRH‘s finest bowler, Umran Malik, and hammered him to all areas of the ground using his speed as CSK finished scoring 202/2.
CSK level their game against SRH in this season by 1-1
With a scorching start in the powerplay, Abhishek Sharma (39 off 24) continued to make significant progress in this competition. Kane Williamson (47 off 37), too, got off to a fast start, to put the chase in full swing. Mukesh Choudhary dropped a catch, but came back to finish the powerplay with back-to-back wickets. And things started to slow down after that.
Aiden Markram tried to break free as the asking rate for SRH increased, but he fell soon. Williamson’s innings had also slowed down, and for CSK, Maheesh Theekshana bowled a brilliant spell to restrict the in-form batters. Towards the end, Nicholas Pooran (64 off 33) held the game tight for SRH, but Choudhary added two more wickets in the death overs to leave SRH reeling. Eventually, CSK won the game by 13 runs as they added two more points under their name on the leaderboard.
