‘He is the right guy to lead the Test team’, Yuvraj feels Rishabh Pant should be groomed for captaincy

Rishabh Pant | GettyFormer India cricketer Yuvraj Singh is impressed with the progress of Rishabh Pant in recent years and he believes the wicketkeeper-batted should be groomed for Test captaincy.

After Virat Kohli stepped down as Test captain earlier this year, Rohit Sharma was named India’s new skipper with Jasprit Bumrah his deputy.

However, Yuvraj feels Rishabh is the right man to lead the Test team in near future and the selectors should hand the vice-captaincy to him.

“You must get someone ready. Like Mahi became captain out of nowhere but they made him, right! Then he evolved. Wicketeeper is always a good thinker because he always has the best view on the ground,” Yuvraj said in an exclusive interview with the newly launched channel Sports18.

“You pick a young guy who can be a future captain, give him time and don’t expect miracles in the first six months or a year. I feel you must believe in the younger guys to get the job done,” he added.

Rishabh Pant often gets criticized for his lack of maturity but Yuvraj Singh thinks otherwise.

“I was immature at that age, Virat was immature when he was captain at that age. But he (Pant) is maturing with time,” said Yuvraj. “I don’t know how the support staff think about it, but I think he is the right guy to lead the Test team.”

Yuvraj reckons Pant has the ability to break Adam Gilchrist’s record of 17 Test centuries as a wicketkeeper-batter.

“You already have four Test hundreds already and you can do that. In terms of best wicket-keeper batsman, I see Rishabh could be the future legend,” said Yuvraj.

Rishabh Pant has played 30 Tests so far, amassing 1920 runs at an average of 40.85 with four tons and nine half-centuries.
