With only one loss in the ongoing season, Gujarat Titans are certainly looking like the most balanced team.
The Punjab Kings (PBKS) are at an important juncture of the IPL 2022, wherein they have to win at least four out of their remaining five games to qualify for the playoffs. Another defeat would put them under serious pressure and put a dent on their chances of finishing in the top four. In Match 48 of the ongoing season, they will be up against the challenge of Gujarat Titans (GT) at Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy, Mumbai.
In their last outing, PBKS were impressive with the ball in hand, as they restricted Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to a score of 153, with Proteas pacer Kagiso Rabada taking four wickets. In reply, the batters could not quite get going, barring Mayank Agarwal and Jonny Bairstow contributing 25 and 32 respectively. In the end, Rishi Dhawan managed to score 21* off 22, but could not seal the game as the team fell short by 20 runs.
On the other hand, Gujarat Titans are the table toppers with eight victories in nine appearances and are certainly looking like the most balanced team in the tournament. In their last fixture, the Titans were average on the bowling front to concede 170, with Pradeep Sangwan emerging as the key performer with two wickets. The openers, Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill were impressive to provide a strong start to the team, and the likes of Rahul Tewatia and David Miller again proved to be the saviours for the team and chased down the target in the last over.
Pitch and conditions
The last match played at this venue witnessed scores of 180+ posted by both the teams, which depicts the strong support for the batters. Most of the wickets have been taken by the pacers in the tournament, but the trend is expected to change as the business end arrives. With minimal dew in the second half, the teams will be happy to post and defend the score as well.
Playing combinations for GT vs PBKS
With only one loss in the ongoing season, the team’s combinations have clicked and returned with results in their favour. The Titans included Sai Sudharsan and pacer Sangwan into the side in the last game, who are expected to retain their place in this fixture as well. Although Alzarri Joseph has been on the expensive side, he provides an extra bowling option, with the captain Hardik Pandya not bowling due to injury concerns. No changes are expected in their Playing XI for this fixture.
Probable XI: Shubman Gill, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Sai Sudharsan, Hardik Pandya (c), David Miller, Rahul Tewatia, Rashid Khan, Pradeep Sangwan, Alzarri Joseph, Lockie Ferguson, Mohammed Shami
Kings played with their strongest squad in the last league match, with most of their bases covered but still lost. The experienced all-rounder Rishi Dhawan has been a boon to the side with his four overs and is a useful batter in the middle-order. The bowlers have done fine job, and will be upbeat ahead of this fixture.
Both Englishmen, Jonny Bairstow and Liam Livingstone, need to be consistent in their performances to secure a much-needed victory for the team. The team management might be mulling to play with the same set of players in this league match as well.
Probable XI: Mayank Agarwal (c), Shikhar Dhawan, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Rishi Dhawan, Kagiso Rabada, Rahul Chahar, Sandeep Sharma, Arshdeep Singh
