Many loopholes in both sides have been exposed and they must come up with a revised strategy.
Chennai Super Kings will have a point to prove as they take on Sunrisers Hyderabad in Match 17 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Having lost their first three games of the season, CSK are off to their worst start in IPL history and they must make the amends sooner than later. SRH haven’t done much either as they are also chasing their maiden win of the season, having lost their first two games.
Many loopholes in both sides have been exposed and they must come up with a revised strategy. CSK have some potent names in the batting order and even MS Dhoni has scored runs this season. However, the bowling attack looks nothing but fragile in the absence of Deepak Chahar. The right-arm quick is set to miss a few more games, at least, and hence, the defending champions must execute a Plan B to perfection.
Fortunately, the presence of multiple all-rounders allows CSK to make changes in the line-up without hindering the balance. Hence, CSK can include the likes of Rajvardhan Hangargekar and Maheesh Theekshana to give opposition batters a tough time. Meanwhile, Ravindra Jadeja’s captaincy has also attracted several detractors and the all-rounder will also be under the pump to deliver.
As far as the Sunrisers Hyderabad are concerned, they fielded arguably their best combination in the first two games and there aren’t any unavailability or injury concerns either. Somehow, the players haven’t come together as a unit and the same has cost the team a couple of victories. Skipper Kane Williamson must roar back to form to marshal his troops from the front.
The likes of Rahul Tripathi, Nicholas Pooran, and Aiden Markram have runs under their belt but the trio is yet to perform to their potential. Meanwhile, Rashid Khan’s exit has left a huge void in the playing XI as Hyderabad bowlers had a hard time this season.
While veterans Bhuvneshwar Kumar and T Natarajan have done pretty well, Umran Malik’s thunderbolts have lacked control. Hence, Williamson has the onus to make the best use of the resources and take SRH to winning ways.
Pitch and Conditions
Tracks are tiring and slowing down with each passing game. Hence, the spinners will have a massive role to play. So far, the track at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy has been pretty even. As dew is set to play a part in the latter half, the team bowling second will have a hard time. Therefore, chasing still looks the way forward here.
Playing combination for CSK vs SRH
Chennai Super Kings
The four-time champions have all the reasons to make some changes in their XI. As the likes of Mukesh Choudhary and Tushar Deshpande haven’t done well. Under-19 star Rajvardhan Hangargekar should be inducted into the XI. There might also be a thought of inducting Maheesh Theekshana at Dwayne Bravo’s expense as Dwaine Pretorius has done pretty well.
Predicted XI: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Robin Uthappa, Moeen Ali, Ambati Rayudu, Ravindra Jadeja (captain), Shivam Dube, MS Dhoni (wicketkeeper), Rajvardhan Hangargekar, Dwaine Pretorius, Chris Jordan, Maheesh Theekshana/ Dwayne Bravo
Even after two thumping defeats and several potent options on the bench, SRH will have a hard time making changes. Umran Malik has so far been the fastest bowler in this competition but his lack of control hasn’t helped him much. SRH might also give a thought to replacing Romario Shepherd with Marco Jansen. However, the former’s batting skills might help him retain his place.
Predicted XI: Rahul Tripathi, Kane Williamson (captain), Aiden Markram, Nicholas Pooran, Abhishek Sharma, Abdul Samad, Romario Shepherd, Washington Sundar, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, T Natarajan, Umran Malik/Kartik Tyagi
